Seattle Central New Media is a coordinated studies program which includes
first-year students from the Graphic Design, Photography and Publishing Arts
Programs at Seattle Central Community College. The purpose of the course is
to study the evolving nature and impact of media in our culture. Students
work collaboratively in this project-based curriculum, exploring the role of
communications in the context of New Media and our society.
A vibrant coordinated studies program fosters retention of students,
community building, and affords students the chance to see how disciplines
are integrated.
Located in the heart of the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, SCCC
students witness daily the changes facing this community. The theme of this
project is "The Changing Face of Capitol Hill," and is a portrait of the
diverse organizations and businesses that make up this neighborhood, some of
which are threatened by sometimes unwelcome development. Students have
created an "online magazine" showcasing the arts and social service
organizations, as well as independent businesses of Capitol
Hill---basically, the places that make it a unique place to live and work.
The idea is that as a whole, the website will show what would be lost if
Capitol Hill prices out its current denizens and businesses.
